Safety

I was snowshoeing on a frozen lake in the Yukon Territory, quite in the middle of nowhere, when a dozen wolves ran on to the ice a hundred yards in front of me. They were big. I stopped. They stopped. We looked at each other. It was always clear that they would turn and flee. They always do. That's just what they did. Men and wolves have a long history and for many hundreds of years the wolves have always lost. They’ve gotten wise. For an instant, though. I faced a situation which, in theory, could have turned out differently. My distant ancestors might have faced a very different result. It’s a worthy thing to realize that we are small and vulnerable and dependent on recent history for the fact that we are safe and well. Let that thought seep in.
